6th Annual Gila River Festival
September 16 to September 19
The Gila River represents the lifeblood of a biologically diverse landscape to which humans are intricately tied. Several thousand plant and animal species call the Gila River and its headwaters home, making the mountains of southwestern New Mexico a North American biodiversityhot spot - many species found in the Gila occur nowhere else in the world. Given that 2010 marks the International Year of Biodiversity, the 6th annual Gila River Festival will celebrate the Gila’s extraordinary web of life, highlighting the importance of New Mexico’s last free-flowing river in sustaining an ecologically diverse and connected landscape. Participants to the Festival will see, touch and feel what biodiversity is all about, and why it matters to human welfare. The Gila River Festival will kick off with a keynote speech entitled "Connections: The Marvelous Complexity of Place" by writer-teacher-activist Mary Sojourner. The River Lecture Series will feature a variety of renowned biodiversity researchers and conservationists, while numerous field trip and workshop opportunities will provide attendees the opportunity to directly experience the area’s incredible biodiversity. In historic downtown Silver City, enjoy museum and gallery tours featuring the art and photography of the Gila River, and on Saturday, the Gila River Festival teams up with the Red Hot Children’s Fiesta to provide hands-on children’s activities to allow kids the opportunity to explore the wonders of nature right in downtown Silver City! On Saturday evening, enjoy the Wild and Scenic Environmental Film Festival, North America's largest environmental film fest, and on Sunday, join us for a panel discussion of the economic benefits of maintaining a healthy, free-flowing Gila River. This year’s festival promises to instill a sense of wonder and connectedness to the Gila River, as well as promote an understanding of the human role in sustaining this remarkable, yet fragile ecosystem. Please join us September 16-19 in celebrating the Gila’s web of life. Location: Silver City and Gila National Forest Phone: 575.538.8078

Wild & Scenic Environmental Film Festival
September 18, 7:00 pm
Join the Gila Conservation Coalition and the Gila River Festival when they host the Wild and Scenic Environmental Film Festival On Tour at the historic Silco Theater on Saturday, September 18 at 7:00 pm. Wild & Scenic On Tour brings together a selection of films from the annual festival held the third week of January in Nevada City, CA. “We’ve all heard the “10 Things” we should do to help curb our ecological footprint. The films featured at Wild & Scenic take it one step further sharing issues on how we can get involved locally or nationally in our community,” says Tour Manager, Susie Sutphin. “Our films help people see how we can fix the system so those 10 simple steps have more collective power. It’s an empowering and motivating experience.” The Wild & Scenic Environmental Film Festival was started by the watershed advocacy group, the South Yuba River Citizens League (SYRCL) in 2003. SYRCL is sharing their success as an environmental group with other organizations to bring the festival to over 90 communities nationwide. It is building a network of grassroots organizations connected by a common goal of using film to inspire activism. The festival’s namesake is in celebration of achieving Wild & Scenic status for 39 miles of the South Yuba River in 1999. They celebrated their 8th annual in January 2010 in Nevada City, CA. The 3-day event features over 125 award-winning films and welcomes over 80 guest speakers, celebrities, and activists who bring a human face to the environmental movement. With the support of their National Partners: Clif Bar, Tom’s of Maine, Osprey Packs, Patagonia and Sierra Nevada Brewing Co. the festival can reach an even larger audience in tour venues coast to coast. Featured at the tour venue in Silver City are films that highlight the beauty and importance of watersheds and community efforts to protect these critical resources. FLATHEAD WILD tells the story of a team of photographers, scientists and local conservation groups who document the beauty, wildlife, and threats to the Flathead River Valley in British Columbia. WATERSHED REVOLUTION explores the concept of a watershed through interviews with citizens working to protect and preserve the Ventura River watershed. Five short films offer a range of fun and endearing themes. The Wild & Scenic Environmental Film Festival is a natural extension of the Gila Conservation Coalition’s work to inspire people to act on behalf of the Gila River and its watershed. Events such as the annual Gila River Festival are an opportunity for people to appreciate and understand the importance of New Mexico’s last free flowing river and to encourage them to work to preserve this incredible resource. The Wild and Scenic Environmental Film Festival shows us through film how communities like ours are working to protect their watersheds and unique landscapes. EVENT DETAILS: Date and Time: Doors open at 6:30 pm and show starts at 7:00 pm. Location Address: Silco Theater, 311 N. Bullard, Silver City Ticket Prices: $8 Tickets can be purchased at the door or at Gila Hike and Bike and O’Keefe’s Bookshop. Location: Silco Theater Phone: 575.538.8078
